“Audacity is a secretly admired, yet openly ridiculed attribute that you must possess in order to make it your respective promised land.” –Matthew C. Horne
When I think of the most powerful thread that ties uncommon achievers together, one word comes to mind: Audacity! If destiny gives us all clear pictures of whom we are, how do some manage to make it into the frame of their vivid destiny images, while others look on at their internal greatness from afar?
I believe that when it comes to destiny, our Creator is fair. We all show up here on this planet with specific gifts, talents and abilities, and the accompanying power to create from these deposits of greatness. Also, our days on the earth are limited. So, we have a very precious existence, evidenced in our God-given brilliance, and a limited amount of days on the earth. With the highest calling any person could ever possess being to fulfill their life’s destiny, then destiny must beckon us to hear its’ voice in countless ways until we choose to believe that the internal words being spoken to us are actually our true selves.
Given these realities, our Creator has to constantly bring the awareness of our true selves before us, because we can not become something that we don’t have an awareness of. That’s why I titled my first book, The Universe Is Inviting You In, because greatness approaches us all in our own unique way, but needs your permission to create through you. Destiny cannot overwhelm us because we possess the ability to choose. So its’ invites are frequent until we find the audacity to believe that we could actually live in the realities that destiny reveals to us concerning our true selves.
Incline Your Ear To Destiny’s Whispers
As a young African-American male who stands 6 feet 5 inches, fitting the bill of a prototypical athlete, I’m often asked: How in the world did you get into motivational speaking? Here is my story, and my desire is that you find yourself somewhere in it.
I attended college on a full-athletic basketball scholarship to play basketball at a Division I University. So it’s not hard to believe I had NBA aspirations given the stage I would be playing on during my four year collegiate stint. But something strange occurred during my sophomore year at this university. I was in a speech class, with my classmates and I given the assignment of giving a persuasive speech. When my presentation date came I gave a speech titled: “Continued Success in the Game of Basketball,” in which I paralleled how I continually succeeded in the game of basketball by always having a vision beyond where I was and allowing this to be my driving force to my next level. I then explained to my classmates that they could continually succeed in whatever they aspired to do by always having a vision beyond where they were. The overall premise was that in order to succeed in life, you must look forward, and not look back.
My only hope was to help my classmates in their dream pursuits and get a decent grade for my speech if possible. Much to my surprise, five of my classmates surrounded me after my speech and expressed to me that I should become a motivational speaker. The 19-year-old cocky basketball player could do nothing but laugh and say “Motivational Speaker; what is a motivational speaker?” But as I said these words the genuine looks on their faces didn’t change and pierced my young ego, making me take a look at the impact my words had on this day. And when I retreated to a still place within myself later on that evening I realized that this wasn’t the first time that my gift for speaking was brought to my attention.
As I mentioned before, we cannot become something that we don’t have an awareness of, so the universe always sends us invitations in various forms, because the fulfillment of our destiny is the driving force behind our existence. A calling as serious as motivational speaking can be a bit intimidating for a youngster of 19 years, but truth is truth, and will never respect your illusionary shortcomings. Destiny is fueled by provisions and instructions to thrive if you accept its’ invite.
This story ends with me being offered and signing my first book contract in my last semester of college. These accounts were not relayed in the spirit of “trying to impress,” rather in the spirit of the truth of destiny and its’ endless possibilities. Many people told me I was too young and that I hadn’t lived enough life yet to occupy the stage of motivational speaking, but the eternal purpose of destiny which spoke to me relayed completely different realities.
There is more to you than you could ever imagine. You have unlimited brilliance, genius and greatness. It’s not always the best; the brightest; or the most qualified that makes it the top. Often times it’s just the person who has the audacity to believe they belong there!
